Hi,
Excellent website - the most informative I`ve seen. Can u help me with a small query i have - I`m concerned
that the mix of fish I have in my tank isn`t quite right - I keep getting problems with PH, and Flukes - scratching.
One of the most common things people say is "your mix of fish is wrong". I`ve had our tank which is 4ft, by 18 inches high, by 12 inches width. I have
two Powerheads, and an undergravel filter, plus two whisper pumps from which I have two airstones - more than enough filteration, etc. The fish we have are :
2 bubble eye orandos - 5 inch
2 mirror carp - 4 inch - these are my pride and joy (i`m a carp fisherman)
1 Green Tench 2 small goldfish - 1 inch
5 fantails - up to 4 inches
Are these mix of fish incorrect ?
Where can i get hold of some of those unusual algae eating fish - almost catfish like which survive ok in coldwater? - I`ve had Plecs, but they died within 3 months.
Thanks in advance Geoff Rauf

Reply. Hello Geoff, we appreciate your compliment. Thank you. If your tap water from the faucet has a pH between 7.2 and 7.8, then I recommend you
forget about it. Really just forget about it. Be sure to change 20% of the water in your aquarium at least twice a week.
You mention that your fish are scratching. We call this behavior glancing, and it is number 6 on our list of signs of Stress and Disease. Click
here
to read the list of Signs of Stress and Disease.
You also mention gill flukes. These may have come into your aquarium on the Tench, which I believe are usually wild and often have pathogens on them. Your Goldfish were
probably raised on a fish farm, where the pathogens are carefully controlled. I recommend you give you give your fish the recommended Treatment. Click
here
for more about the Recommended Treatment.
You have plenty of filtration, but undergravel filter are not recommended. I recommend that you get rid of your undergravel filter, reduce your gravel until it is at most
1/4" deep, and get a Penguin 330 Filter with two BIO-Wheels. Actually you should get two of these filters. Click
here
for more about BIO-Wheel filters.
I see you have Orandas and Fantails, which are very mild fish, mixed with Comets, Carp, and Tench, which are often quite aggressive to Orandas and Fantails. You should separate
these two groups of fish. Click
here to read more about these two groups of fish.
I have seen Channel Catfish kept with Comets and Koi. We do not sell Channel Catfish, but they are often available, though they may be illegal to keep in an aquarium in your
state. If so, I would recommend you avoid getting them. Check with someone in your area.

I need to know if i can keep a betta in mineral water???

Reply. Hello Rachael, I not sure what mineral water is. I think it's bottled water with some minerals and is possibly carbonated. I saw Schwepp's
Mineral Water in the grocery store. I have never tried it with my fish, but I doubt it would be good for them.
We recommend bottled drinking water. I see one gallon bottles of drinking water selling for less than a dollar in most of the grocery stores that I shop in.
But do not use distilled or de-ionized water that has almost all of the minerals removed. Click

HI, I WANTED TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT I WAS REALLY EXCITED TO FIND YOUR WEBSITE. I HAVE FOUND IT TO BE SO INFORMATIVE AND
BEING AN IN-EXPERIENCED IN FISH BUYING AND WHAT GOES WITH WHAT, I AM ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT BASED ON THIS WEB SITE.
I DO HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS, HOW DO I KNOW WHAT BIO-WHEEL TO BUY FOR MY AQUATECH 55 GAL? I UNDERSTAND THAT IT CAN HAVE TWO BIO-WHEELS FROM THE WEBSITE BUT, IT DOESN'T SAY WHICH
ONE HERE OR ON THE MARINELAND WEBSITE. ALSO, I HAVE JUST SET MY AQUARIUM UP ON TUESDAY THE 29TH
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TO DO FIRST ? I HAVE PUT THE WATER CONDITIONER THAT MAKES IT SAFE FOR THE FISH BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PH LEVEL & AMMONIA? WOULD YOU SAY THAT I NEED THE
BIO-WHEEL FIRST OR SHOULD I BUY FISH OR WHAT? I AM REALLY NEW AT ALL THIS BUT IF YOU COULD HELP ME WITH SOME ADVISE I WOULD GLADY APPRECIATE IT.
I AM PLANNING ON DOING A COMBINATION OF FISH FOR INSTANCE, CLOWN LOACHES, GOURAMIS, REDTAIL SHARK, RAINBOW SHARK, BALA SHARKS, BARBS, DANIOS, SPINEY EELS, SO FAR THAT'S ALL I
KINOW. IS THE CICHLIDS, SWORDTAILS, OSCARS, STINGRAY ABLE TO BE ADDED TO MY AQUARIUM? I GUESS YOU CAN SEE THAT I REALLY NEED SOME ADVISE.
I HAVE FOUND NO HELP AT PET STORES OR ... I HAVE BOUGHT A BOOK BUT IT JUST KIND OF TELLS YOU IN A GENERIC WAY BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE I DO THE RIGHT THINGS BEFORE I ADD ANY
FISH TO THE AQUARIUM.
PLEASE HELP ME ... THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP I KNOW I HAVE ASKED ALOT OF QUESTIONS.

Reply. Hello Melissa, we appreciate you compliment. Thank you. The Penguin 330 is the right size filter for your 55 gallon aquarium. This filter
has two BIO-Wheels and is rated for aquariums up to 60 gallons. Get the Penguin 330 and let it run for about 3 days, before you add a few fish.
If your tap water has a pH of between 7.2 and 7.8, and you follow the advice on this web, you don't need to be concerned about pH. Click

Click
here to read about several compatible groups of fish. You will probably find one, maybe 2, or 3,
or even 4. You say all of this is new to you. So a good place to start is to click here and read about the 7 Essentials of Keeping Fish. On that page you'll find links to more information
through out this web site. Good luck. |

I have 3 fish that the petstore called Jelly Bean Parrot Cichlids. I did not find anything on your site that resembled them.
I would like to know how they breed and where they come from. I saw 4 different colors of these fish all solid colors --Blue, Hot Pink, Purple and Bananna Yellow. Do you know
anything about these type of fish?

Reply. Hello Lafave, I'm going to guess that these fish are sold in local pet stores under the name Blood Parrots. Which sounds kind of gory, so
the name may have been changed to make it more appealing, and what is more appealing than Jelly Bean?
Blood Parrots are a hybrid of two Cichlids species. One parent is a Red Devil and the other parent is a Gold Severum. This is like a mule with one parent a horse and the other
parent a donkey.
Adult Blood Parrots are reddish orange, The juveniles are naturally gray or tan, before they are colorized to make them various garish colors in much the same way Painted Glass
Fish are colorized. Click

Hello,
I'm thinking about setting up an aquarium and keeping several ghost shrimp. However, I'm also thinking about keeping clown loaches
and a rainbow shark. I've noticed that they aren't listed as compatible with each other ... though I figure you probably don't list every possible combination of
critters that could live together. So, I ask you ... do clown loaches/rainbow sharks eat ghost shrimp? I know the loaches will eat snails, but shrimp?
I'm curious, because I would love to have several ghost shrimp frolicking about on the bottom with some of these characters ... as well as use them as a treat food source for a
puffer that I'm thinking about getting (does that make me a bad person?). Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read this. I really enjoy your site. It's my
favorite commercial fish site by far. I intend to buy several of mine from you (as the local pet store is not an option at all). Again, thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Justin N. Palatka, FL |

Reply. Hello Justin, yes you are right in saying that we do not list every possible compatible combination of fish and critters. I just try to
list a few, maybe 5 or 6, fish that I know are almost always compatible. Maybe I should mention that there are usually many more compatible tank mates too.
I agree with your suspicion that the Sharks and Loaches will probably eat the Ghost Shrimp, and the Puffers will certainly and immediately eat the Ghost Shrimp.
Most everyone falls in love with Ghost Shrimp, especially when they see a Ghost Shrimp using all four of its tiny "hands" to eat bits of food from here and there.
Once you've fallen in love with a Ghost Shrimp, it's no fun watching it being eaten by a fish. Click

Hi there,
I note that you are in the business of fish sales.
I have on many occasions used your site as a source of advice and to expand my
knowledge of fish and the maintenance involved in keeping them.
I thank you for making this advice freely available.
I have recently learnt of this product (Aqua Babies).
The facts are disturbing to say the least.
I would ask you to carry out your own investigations into this product and if you supply it to your customers I would request in the interests of humanely treating all species of
fish, you remove it from your stock inventory.
I would also appreciate if you could alert your customers to the cruelty of this product and request that they boycott it.
I
understand you may not want to get caught up in the politics of such an issue, but, for all those who truely care for the fish they keep, we should do what we can to drive the
profit crazed company who are produce this product out of the aquatics business.

Reply. Hello Kevin, yes I think you need a bigger aquarium. You said you are moving. go to your new home and set up a new and bigger aquarium.
Then move you fish from you old 29-gallon to your new aquarium in your new home. When you move fish across a town or across a state, the method is about the same. Click

Decide how many Black Lyre Mollies you want to buy. I recommend 2 or 3 males and 4 to 6 females.
You can include a Special Request with your order and specify the number of males and the number of females you want, or any
other special request you'd like us to keep in mind when we catch your fish.

Reply. Hello again, Ghost Shrimp are not a fish but they do very well in fish bowls and small aquariums like yours, where they will eat tiny bits
of food and help keep the water clear and clean. Click
here for more about Ghost Shrimp.
White Clouds almost always do well in cool water aquariums with Bettas and Ghost Shrimp. A few people have reported to me that their White Clouds nipped on their Betta Fish,
and a few other people reported that the Betta nipped on the White Cloud. So White Clouds are not compatible with Bettas 100% of the time, but they are usually compatible. Click
here
for more about White Clouds.
You probably know that we do not recommend undergravel filters. You small aquarium will probably work better if you remove the undergravel filter and most of the gravel,
until you have a layer of gravel about 1/4" deep. Click
here for more information about aquarium filters.
