Here is a picture of a large Buttikoferi Cichlid with Hole in the Head Disease. This picture was sent to us by William of Michigan.

Tom and Nevin,

Thanks for covering my e-mail during one of your latest segments. I think that my fish passed away because there was a lack of aeration during the Quick Cure treatment., rather than the result of the Quick Cure itself.

I have now added some air-stones and a Bio-wheel. Below are some pictures of my adult Buttikoferi and Red Devil earlier this year when they were somewhat healthier. They were very old fish (over 12 years old), and were living under lax water treatment while they were not under my care for a period of time.

You can see the hole-in-the head on my adult Buttikoferi. The other pictures are of my adult Red Devil, who was suffering from a skin ulcer and fin and tail rot. I tried to cure them, but unfortunately, I was too late.

Now I have started over with a Frontosa and a small Buttikoferi seperated in my 55 gallon aquarium. In my 40-gallon aquarium, I started over with a small Albino Oscar, a Jaguar, and a Pike Cichlid. I plan to move them to much larger tanks (125-gallon?) in the future.

I also benefited from your advice and bought myself a Penguin 330 Bio-wheel Filter, and cut down on the gravel in my tanks. I am now doing partial water changes 2 times a week, like you suggested. I am curing a small case of ich on my Pike Cichlid in one of my tanks, but otherwise my new fish are doing great!

Thank you for your help and your informative web site. I wish that I discovered it sooner! Keep up the great work with Pet Fish Talk!

Reply. Hello William. Thank you for sending us a picture, which clearly shows the "Hole in the Head" disease on your Buttikoferi.
