This
page contains important information about washing
gravel in aquariums to keep the gravel clean.
In this
picture you see Catherine, age 5,
with a new Gravel Washer that we just
bought to clean the gravel in the bottom
of our small above-ground pond, which
is a lot like cleaning the gravel in
an aquarium.
If
you have only 1/4 inch of gravel in your aquarium,
you can just stir it with your net each day to help
particles in the gravel get into the filter. If
you have more than 1/4" of gravel, you should not
stir the gravel. Instead wash the gravel with a
Gravel Washer. Don't get the kind of gravel washer
with a bag that puts the water back in the aquarium.
There
seem to be two sizes of gravel washers; get the
bigger one, even if you have a small aquarium, because
the smaller one does not seem to work right. Carefully
read the directions on the package. Click on one
of the items below for more about cleaning the gravel
in your fish's home.
