The picture above
shows Catherine, age 5, she just opened the jar of floating fish food for goldfish.
She put a few too many flakes in the cap, so she poured some back into the jar, then a few more, until finally she had the right amount.
She looked carefully at the amount, so she could try to remember how much to feed the fish next time. Then she flipped the flakes into the pond.

What Many Children Like Best.
While many adults seem to prefer an aquarium with a few large fish, children often prefer a fish bowl with
several different types of small animals such as small fish like White Clouds, a freshwater crab,
a dwarf frog, a tadpole, a
few ghost shrimp, a freshwater clam,
and an aquatic snail. Keep this in mind, when you shop for a child. Click here

What to Avoid
The combination of glass, electricity, and water is not safe for most children. So a warm water aquarium with a heater is not

Teach Children How to Feed the Fish.
It's very important to patiently teach children how to carefully feed the animals in their
fish bowl twice each day without feeding more than their fish and other animals can eat.
Show the child how to take a small three fingered pinch of food and put it all in the bowl. Or even better put the food in the cap, look at it, try
to remember the amount, then flip it from the cap.
Then wait and carefully watch to see if all the food is eaten. If it is all eaten, then have the child put another small pinch of food into the
fish bowl. Keep repeating this procedure until the animals are well fed.
Be sure the crabs and shrimps that live on the bottom get plenty to eat. After 10 minutes look for bits of uneaten food, and remove them with a
small 3 inch fish net.
The picture on the right was taken just after Catherine flipped the floating flake food into the pond. My beautiful 6" Red and White Pond Comet
came up to the surface and starting eating. Catherine and I watched this Comet eat all the flakes. If it hadn't eaten all the flakes in about 10 minutes, we would have used a small net
to remove the uneaten flakes.
