This page continues the discussion of Aquarium
Ornaments, and we consider air pumps, airline tubing, air stones, bubble wands, and air
valves to be ornaments. |

1. Air Pumps
Small air pumps are used in aquariums to pump air through a thin tube to a
filter, to an aerating device, or to an air powered ornament. We don't recommend aquarium filters that use air pumps. We recommend aquarium filters with BIO-Wheels. Click
here
for more information about aquarium filters with BIO-Wheels.
When your aquarium has a BIO-Wheel, it will fully aerate the water, and aerating devices such as air stones and bubble-wands are redundant and not
needed to aerate water.
So the only use for air pumps is to improve the appearance of an aquarium with an air store, a bubble-wand, or an air powered ornament such as a
diver or a treasure chest that opens and closes. We consider air pumps to be ornaments
and not essential aquarium equipment.
Air line tubing that is about 1/4" in diameter connects the air pump to the devices, such as the ones discussed in the previous paragraph,
that use air. |

2. Air Stones and Bubble-Wands
... attach to the end of a piece of air line tubing and disperse air
bubbles into the water. This aerates the water, but an aquarium with an external power filter with a BIO-Wheel doesn't need more aeration, so air stones and bubble-wands are just to improve the
appearance and are not needed to filter or aerate the water, provided your aquarium has an aquarium filter with a BIO-Wheel.

3. Air Valves
Suppose your air pump has one outlet,
and you want to supply air to both an air stone and an air powered ornament. Connect the air line tubing from the air pump to a two-way air valve. Next connect one of the valves to the air stone
and the other valve to the ornament.
Actually it's better to get a three-way valve and bleed a little air off through the third valve, so there won't be any back pressure to damage the
air pump. Check the directions that come in the box with your air pump for more advice about bleeding off the extra air and preventing damage to your air pump.
