1. Aquarium
Decorations When you buy decorations and ornaments for your aquarium be sure that
they are all
specifically labeled for use in aquariums. Do not put anything in your aquarium that may be toxic to your fish. We recommend you get all your aquarium
decorations and ornaments from a pet store or an online aquarium
specialty dealer.
There is wide variety of rocks, plastic plants, plastic driftwood, backgrounds, and ceramic decorations available. Rocks from your garden may
contain pesticides, chemicals, or toxic minerals.

Many more decorations. Many of these decorations provide openings to caves that your
fish will enjoy exploring.
There seems to be a temptation to buy some beautiful rocks, gravel, or ornaments that are not labeled for use in aquariums, but there is a
significant risk that some of these items may be toxic to your fish.
Click
here for more information about not contaminating your
aquarium.
2. Plastic Plants
Some plastic plants and other decorations contain metal wires that can rust and pollute
aquariums. Use only Plastic Plants that are labeled for use in aquariums. Plastic plants for aquariums come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and shapes.
On this web site we recommend keeping the gravel in aquariums and fish bowls at most 1/4" thick. Click
here to read more about Aquarium Gravel.
Most Plastic Aquarium Plants have a base that is designed to be pushed down about 1" into the gravel to anchor the plastic plant, and this will not work well in an aquarium with only
1/4" of gravel. Click
here to read about an ingenious do-it-yourself project to fix this problem.
