Fresh and Brackish Water

Pufferfish in Aquariums
Click here to buy several species of Pufferfish.

Comments
Puffers have a unique and comical way of swimming. Puffers often nip at the fins of other Puffer and other species of fish.

This nipping can be minimized by keeping puffers very well fed. Freshwater Dwarf Puffers do less nipping than many other types of of Puffer Fish.

Some species of Puffer Fish live best in freshwater, some other species live best in brackish water, and some Puffers live best in marine or sea water.

Freshwater contains very little salt. Brackish Water has about one Tablespoon of aquarium salt in each five gallons of water.

Sea Water has much more salt. Each type of Puffer Fish seems to do best in one of these three types of water.

The table below shows the letter B for a species of Puffer Fish that lives best in Brackish Water or the letter F for a species of Puffer Fish that lives best in Fresh Water.

Puffefish - Information about Keeping Puffer Fish in Aquariums.   Here's a Figure Eight Puffer Fish for sale at our online fish store. Click here for more information about buying Puffer Fish from us. Figure Eight Puffers are less aggressive than many other species of Puffer Fish.

The picture above shows a young Figure Eight Puffer Fish, Tetraodon biocellatus, about 1.5" long that was looking for food, when this picture was taken.

Puffers are big eaters that always seem to be hungry, and unless they are fed almost constantly, they will nip on the fins of the other fish in their aquarium.

Compatibility
Some Puffers live best in brackish water and are best kept with other Brackish Water Fish such as Silver Needle Nose Gars, Archer Fish, Monos, Scats, White Tip Shark Cats, and the Fan Dancer Goby.

Other species of Puffer Fish live best in freshwater with very little salt and do best with fast swimming fish such as Barbs, Danios, Rainbow Fish, and Sharks. Crabs and Shrimps are usually eaten by Puffers.

Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Lifespan
Puffers can live for several years, and grow to the sizes listed in the table above.

Pufferfish Dentistry
Yes, that's right, Pufferfish need to regularly visit the dentist about every 6-months just like you!

Most and maybe all Pufferfish need to eat food with a tough shell, such as small snails. The snail shells will wear on the Puffer's teeth.

Otherwise their teeth will grow too long and may interfere with eating.

News about Puffers
Click here to read an interesting news report that says, "Humans were the first animals with a backbone to have their DNA read letter by letter. The runner-up is a fat, poisonous puffer fish, better known in sushi restaurants."
