Our Pictures

This website has lots of pictures of the fish that we offer for sale. Will the fish you get look like the fish in our pictures?

No! This is like buying a kitten or a puppy, that will change as it grows and matures.

Click here to read more about our fish.

We stock and ship fish that are the ideal size to ship.

Not so small that they will not do well when shipped.

Yet not so big that they will have trouble adjusting to a new home.

The fish in almost all of our pictures were young fish like the ones we ship that we raised up, and you can too!

Comments: This is a Premium Pet Fish, and we never see Premium Male Red Picta like these in any of the live fish stores or the online stores that we visit.

Premium Pet Fish are more energetic, hardier, and have brighter colors with a beautiful metallic sheen.

Click here to learn more about Premium Pet Fish.

Origin: Their ancestors originally lived in South America, but now there are found in aquariums throughout the world.

Maximum Size:
In aquariums Male Red Picta can grow to be about 1" long, and females to about 1.5" long, including their tails.

Behaviors: Most Pictas are active swimmers and are not aggressive, but males quarrel with each other.

Compatibility: Some recommended tank mates include, other smaller Endler's Livebearers, Rainbowfish, Danios, small Gouramis, and many other small to medium size aquarium fish.

Click here to read more about compatible groups of pet fish.

Temperature: Pictas can live pretty well from about 65 to 80 degrees F., but they're probably most comfortable at about 74 degrees F.

Click here to learn about aquarium temperature, aquarium thermometers, and aquarium heaters.

Feeding: Premium Fish Food Flakes when small and small Premium Pellet Food when larger.

Click here to learn more about and shop online for premium fish foods.

Water Conditions: Pictas seem to be tolerant of a wide range of water conditions. Probably a pH of at least 7.5 with high hardness is best.

Most water in the US seems to be OK, so it's probably best NOT to adjust the pH or the hardness of the water. Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8.

We ship them in this water. Click here for a lot more information about aquarium water conditions.

Aquarium Size: It is probably best to house these fish in at least a 20-gallon tank, but bigger is better.

Decor: Pictas do not need gravel, and a layer of gravel more than 1/4" thick will usually fill with bits of uneaten food that will contaminate the water.

Click here for more about aquarium gravel.

Live Plants are beautiful and improve the water quality.

Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel Filters are highly recommended. A Penguin 200B in an aquarium with 20 to 30-gallons of water is OK.

Click here to learn more about aquarium filters.

The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range.

Click here to learn more about using Lava Rocks in aquariums.

Life Span: Pictas can live for a few  years with good water and good food.

Gender: Males, as shown above, have brighter coloring and are usually smaller than females, which are usually plumper.

Breeding: Pictas are livebearers, the male fertilizes the eggs inside the female, and after weeks of waiting, she pops them out as little guppies!

Popularity: Pictas are rare aquarium fish but should become very popular fish.

Names: The scientific name of Male Red Picta is Micropoecilia picta

Variations: There are a few different variations of Pictas, but have not yet seen them or been able to obtain them.

Picta is closely related to Guppies and Endler's, which are two other species of livebearing fishes.

Guppies and Endler's often interbreed, but it's reported that Endler's do not interbreed with Guppies or with Endler's.

These Picta Livebearers are an exciting new livebearer, and we recommend them highly.
