Our Pictures

This website has lots of pictures of the fish that we offer for sale. Will the fish you get look like the fish in our pictures? No! This is like buying a kitten or a puppy, that will change as it grows and matures.

Click here to read more about our fish.

We stock and ship fish that are the ideal size to ship. Not so small that they will not do well when shipped. Yet not so big that they will have trouble adjusting to a new home.

The fish in almost all of our pictures were young fish like the ones we ship that we raised up, and you can too!

If you're interested in buying an item that's marked "Out of Stock", we recommend that you add this page to your favorites or bookmarks and check back on this page from time to time.

We usually do not get advance notice, so we can't supply you with any more information, and it will do no good to email us and ask us, when we'll have it back in stock.

Tinfoil Barbs, like the 8" long one shown in this video, swim fast and are experts at avoiding being swallowed by much larger fish.

Here is another video of a Tinfoil Barb, where you can see its shinny metallic body and dark orange fins.

Scientific Name
Barbonymus schwanefeldii or Barbonymus altus

Most of the Tinfoil Barbs available to aquarists are B. schwanefeldii or B. altus. These two distinct species are very similar. Schwanefeldii is usually more silvery, and the Altus is more golden. We may have one or the other at any given time.

These two species may also produce hybrids that may be for sale to aquarists. But really there is nothing wrong with hybrids. Most orchids are hybrids, and many of the most popular freshwater pet fish, such as Angel Fish, Platys, Swordtails, Serpae Tetras, and many others.

Comments
Tinfoil Barbs grow to be large. They are hardy, energetic, mild tempered, and usually don't bother other fish. Tinfoils can swim fast to avoid being bothered by other fish, and this makes Tinfoil Barbs good fish for large aquariums with large fish.

Tinfoil Barb at AquariumFish.net, a retail Tropical Fish dealer, that makes buying barbs easy and fun.     This 8" Tinfoil Barb is much larger than the Tinfoil Barbs for sale at our online Tropical Fish store. Click here for more about buying a Tinfoil Barb from us. Tinfoil Barbs usually do well with other large fish.

Appropriate Home
Eventually a large aquarium with at least 80-gallons of water, an exterior power filter with a BIO-Wheel, a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel, and an aquarium heater adjusted to between 76 and 80-degrees F. Click here for more about warm water aquariums. Over a period of time Tinfoil Barbs are able to adjust to temperatures down to at least 72-degrees F. and possibly a few degrees lower.

Recommended Diet
When they are small, feed Tinfoil Barbs floating flake food. Later when they've grown, feed them pellet food labeled for tropical fish. These foods are available in most stores that sell pet fish. Click here for more about feeding fish.

Compatibility
Tinfoil Barbs are a schooling fish, and they should be kept in a group with at least 3 Tinfoils. A group with 6 or more is ideal but will require a very big aquarium, as these fish will quickly grow to be very large. Good tank mates for Tinfoil Barbs: a school of Bala Sharks, one or several Rainbow Sharks, a group of Gold, Blue, or Opaline Gouramis, a Pangasius Catfish, a Clown Knifefish, a school of Clown Loaches, a Snowflake Eel, and some Spiny Eels. Large Tinfoil Barbs are often seen in aquariums with Oscars and Plecostomus Catfish.

Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Lifespan
Tinfoil Barbs live for several years and grow to at least 14" and probably bigger.

Customer Comments

Hi, I'd like to thank you for your advice on tinfoil barbs and keeping them in groups of 6 or more. It saved our Pictus Catfish a lot of grief when we added another 4 tinfoils! Now we have a school of 6 super fast swimmers who are a lot of fun to watch.

Thanks,
Wendy

Reply. Hello Wendy. Thank you for your comments about your school of Tinfoil Barbs. Now they are probably completely preoccupied with keeping track of each other, and lots of fun to watch schooling together.

Tinfoil Barbs like the ones in this picture often congregate closely together.

Tinfoil Barbs like the ones in this picture usually swim closely together in a school and greatly enjoy each others company.
