Rainbowfishes. There are Boesemani Rainbowfish,
Australian Rainbowfish, New Guinea Rainbows,
and several other species of Rainbow
Fishes.
Comments
All
Rainbows are a very good aquarium fish, mild tempered,
usually brightly colored, very hardy, and they don't
grow too big. Click

This
mature male New Guinea Rainbow is
about 3 inches long and in full color.
Usually we don't have this Rainbow Fish
for sale, but once in a while we do.
Here is a comment about Neon Rainbows, "I've kept Neon
Blue Rainbows for several years in optimal conditions
in my aquarium. I have a school with 8 of them.
They get along good together and don't bother any
other fish. They are now just under 2" long."
"The males and the
females are both the same bright blue color. Some
of the fish are slim and probably males. The others
are deeper bodied and wider and probably females.
These are my favorite fish."
Just a note that most of
the rainbowfish common names
and sizes on AquariumFish.net
are listed incorrectly.
The below are corrections.
Please note that all sizes
listed are SL, or Standard
Length, and do not include
the tail:
"Turquoise Rainbowfish":
the picture displayed is
either M. praecox
or a hybrid of some sort.
Melanotaenia praecox
is the Neon Rainbowfish
and the same fish you also
have listed as "Neon Blue
Dwarf". The so-called "Turquoise
Rainbowfish" is Melanotaenia
lacustris or Lake Kutubu
Rainbowfish and it does
not bear any resemblance
to the fish in your picture.
The Turquoise Rainbowfish
grows to 4-5"
"Neon Blue Rainbowfish":
the picture displayed is
of M. praecox, which
is the Neon Rainbowfish,
not a Neon "Dwarf" Rainbowfish.
The Neon Rainbowfish max
size is 2.5 to 3" and not
2" as stated on your web
site.
"New Guinea Rainbow": the
picture displayed is that
of Glossolepis incisus,
the Salmon-Red Rainbowfish,
which is also commercially
known as the Red or Irian
Red Rainbowfish.
The New Guinea Rainbowfish
is Melanotaenia affinis
and bears no resemblance
to the fish in your picture.
G. incisus maximum
size is from 5 to 6", not
3.5" as stated on your web
site.
"Yellow Rainbowfish": the
correct name of this fish
is the Lake Tebera Rainbowfish.
Hope this information helps
you and your customers with
keeping Rainbowfish

Recommended Diet Floating flake food for tropical fish. Rainbows
enjoy an occasional dessert of freeze dried blood
worms, which are actually mosquito larvae. Both
of these foods are available in most stores that
sell pet fish. Rainbows
also relish an occasional feeding of a few live
Black Worms and live or frozen brine shrimp. Click
here for more about feeding your fish.

these Rainbow Fish a few Black Worms every other

Above: the Yellow Rainbowfish, which is also called the Lake Tebera Rainbowfish, whose scientific name is Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi. All of these pictures were taken by one of us of our fish, swimming in our aquariums. The picture just above shows a young fish about 1.5" to 2" long, like the ones we often have for sale.
Above:
the top picture shows a Turquoise
Rainbowfish
just after it arrived here from a famous fish farm, and it was nice. The lower picture shows a large male that has grown up here in one of our aquariums. This species is also
called
the Lake Kutubu
Rainbowfish.
Scientific
name: Melanotaenia
lacustris.
Above: The two pictures, shown just above, are of the exact same fish, but the lower picture was taken four months after the top picture. We buy and sell many thousands of fish each week, and we like to occasionally pick out a nice one and raise it up in our own aquariums, like we are doing with this fish, which was great when we got it and is getting better all the time. This is a great aquarium fish. Very hardy, brightly colored, very active, grows to about 3", and is not a trouble maker!

The lower picture was taken about 6 weeks later, after the fish had grown quite a bit and increased in coloration. It's great fun to raise fish up.

Size
and Lifespan Smaller Rainbow species live a few years, and larger
Rainbow species can live for several years. The
maximum sizes of the various Rainbow species are
given in the table above.
I was considering schooling
3 Boesemani, with 2 Yellow,
2-3 neon blue and 3 New
guinea rainbows. would that
be considered one school
of 10-11??
Also, can you ship specific
sex. does it matter as to
the ratio of male to female
with this species? The males
are more colorful but when
would too much machisimo
cause aggression/stress
in the tank.
Thanks for your time Wonderful Site ...

Reply.
Hello Chris. Different species of Rainbow fish generally
do not get confused and school together. Each species
will usually keep to its own species. You should
plan on keeping a group of at least six of each
species. It is nice to have a few males and several
females. Three males and five or more females makes
a nice group.
Sometimes we can
determine the gender of the fish that we ship, but
we can't always do it with 100% accuracy. We buy
Rainbows from fish farms. We do not breed and raise
Rainbows ourselves, so we have no reason to keep
females. If you add a Special Request to your order,
and ask us to ship you a certain number of males
and a certain number of females, we will try our
best to follow your request.
If you order from us using PayPal's shopping
