Our Pictures

This website has lots of pictures of the fish that we offer for sale. Will the fish you get look like the fish in our pictures? No! This is like buying a kitten or a puppy, that will change as it grows and matures.

Click here to read more about our fish.

We stock and ship fish that are the ideal size to ship. Not so small that they will not do well when shipped. Yet not so big that they will have trouble adjusting to a new home.

The fish in almost all of our pictures were young fish like the ones we ship that we raised up, and you can too!

Below in this section is lots of information about Eartheaters that we recommend you read, before ordering them.
Maximum Size: in aquariums Eartheaters often grow to be 5" or 6" long, sometimes 9", rarely 12" and perhaps even bigger with ideal water conditions and lots of premium food.
All or almost all mammals like you, me, cats, dogs, and mice grow to a maximum size then grow smaller in old age.
Unlike mammals, all or almost all fish species continue to grow larger throughout their entire lives; so infrequently there are very old, very large Eartheaters.
Behaviors: generally Eartheaters are mild tempered fish except when spawning. Eartheaters enjoy examining the bottom, the mid-waters, and the water's surface. They're usually shy but often curious about people.
Compatibility: recommended tank mates include Firemouth Cichlids, Severums, Electric Blue Jack Dempseys, Plecostomus Catfish, Pictus Catfish, ...
Eartheaters will not do well in an aquarium with very aggressive fish like regular Jack Dempseys.
Temperature: 74 to 80 degrees F. Click here to learn about aquarium temperature, aquarium thermometers, and aquarium heaters.
Feeding: Premium Flakes, when small. Premium Pellets, when larger. Click here to learn more about and shop online for premium fish foods.
Severums also enjoy eating peas. DrTom buys a small bag of frozen peas, takes a few out, and puts them in a glass of water to thaw. Then he drops them into the aquarium for the Severums to eat. They love their peas! And peas are probably good for them.
If the Eartheaters are small, it helps to squeeze the hearts of the peas out of their husks and feed just the hearts.
Water Conditions: ideally soft water with a pH of about 6 to 7, and this kind of water may be necessary for Eartheaters eggs to hatch.
But this fish can easily adapt to harder more alkaline water with a pH up to 8.
Collectors of wild Eartheaters have told us that during the dry season their water usually becomes harder and the pH may go up to 8. So these fish are able to gradually adapt to a variety of water conditions.
Here in our facilities the water is hard and the pH is usually about 7.8. We ship them in this water.
Aquarium Size: eventually at least 80-gallons, and even bigger will be better.
Decor: Eartheaters are easily startled and often swim off very fast and can jump. So it's important not to have anything sharp in their aquarium and to have a tight fitting aquarium cover or hood.
Decor: Eartheaters need gravel. Keep a layer that's shallow enough that they can dig all the way to the bottom. As they get older and bigger, they will be able to dig deeper. If the layer of gravel is deeper than they can dig, the gravel will fill with bits of uneaten food and become contaminated. Click here for more about aquarium gravel.
Aquatic plants and/or aquarium-safe driftwood are both nice but not necessary. Eartheaters will uproot most types of live aquarium plants. Eartheaters prefer dim lighting.
Aquarium Filter: Bio-Wheel filters are highly recommended. Two Penguin 350B filters will fit on the back of an 80-gallon aquarium and are ideal. Click here to learn more about aquarium filters.
The addition of Lava Rocks will keep nitrates in the ideal range. Click here to learn more using Lava Rocks in aquariums.
Life Span: at least 10-years and probably longer. So you should be sure that you can commit to taking care of them for many years.
Gender: if you get young fish of the same size and raise them together, the males will usually grow to be larger, develop a slight bump on their heads above their eyes, and grow longer more pointed fins. Eventually males will be more colorful and females will be plumper, when they fill with eggs.
Breeding: get 6 or 8 young fish and raise them up together in a large aquarium. Eventually two of them will form a pair, and make the others miserable.
Many but not all Eartheaters prefer to lay eggs on a large flat rock. The eggs hatch in a few days, and the parents mouthbrood the tiny babies, which are large enough to eat powdered food, when they are released by the parents.
Click here for a lot more about breeding Tropical Fish in aquariums.
Popularity: For a long-long time Eartheaters have been a very popular aquarium fish. When young they're gray, tan, and then olive green, but when mature the males are colorful. Many aquarists seem to enjoy their mild and friendly personalities.
We hope you've enjoyed reading these comments.
