Hi, I just wanted to say that you have a wonderful site. I was looking at your site for fish that would be compatible in my
tank. I really liked the information that you provided me.
I also wanted to let you know that I have had great success in keeping Parrot Fish in my tank along with Pacus, Tinfoil Barbs, Plecos and Oscars.

"green terror" and the pest store said the biggest it would get is 5inches now the fish is almost a foot long I was wondering if you could tell me the normal size of
green terrors that would be a lot of help so I know if I need a bigger tank

Hello Lynn. That you for your nice compliments about this web
site.
Click
here to see the table of Neotropical Cichlids with the
maximum size for each species. Your Green Terror is at the top
of the yellow table and is listed with a "maximum" size of 10".
But this page also says,
"The maximum sizes are not really the maximum. I have
occasionally seen specimens of each of these fish that are
bigger than the sizes listed as the maximum in the above table.
But fish of the sizes listed would be considered very big for
that species."
I recommend that you buy your big fish an
aquarium with at least 80 gallons of water.

About a month ago we purchased two cichlids from our local pet store, one is a Jack Dempsey, the other is a pink convict. These two fish are in a 38 gallon aquarium
with a variety of other fish, including a red tiger oscar, different types of gouramis, a red pacu, two tinfoil barbs, a two bala sharks, two silver dollars, a dragon fish and an algae eater.
After coming home from work tonight we saw that we now have about 100+ fry swimming around in a group. The proud parents seem to be the Jack Dempsey and the pink convict.
I was reading your article on breeding cichlid’s, it was very helpful. I’m just curious now if two different types of cichlids breed (like we have in our tank) what will the babies look like when they get older? Any ideas?
We’ve found your website very helpful in starting our fish tank, and watching it grow. Any ideas or advice you can give us on raising our new babies would be greatly appreciated, ...
Sincerely,
Devon and Shaun |

Reply. Hello Devon and Shaun. Thank you for your email and the details about your fish.
First I should say that your Jack Dempsey and your Pink Convict are separate Cichlid Species. So they are in the same family, but they are different species.
Your Jack Dempsey has the scientific name Cichlasoma octofasciatum, which has apparently been changed in the last few years to Nandopsis octofasciatum.
Your Pink Convict is a Cichlasoma nigrofaciatum, which has also been changed in the last few year to Archocentrus nigrofasciatus. If so, your Jack Dempsey and Pink Convict are no longer even in the same genus.
Like a horses and donkeys interbreed to produce mules, Jack Dempseys and Convicts will frequently interbreed to produce hybrid babies. These babies can be raised in the same way Convicts are raised. Click here
for more information about raising baby Convict Cichlids.
Several years ago I saw some Jack Dempsey and Convict Cichlid hybrids, but I can't remember what they look like now. I apologize if this disappoints you.
If you raise some of the babies, I would appreciate a picture from you, which I will post here on this site, so we can all see them. |
