Comments
Frontosa Cichlids live in the deep water down among the piles rocks in Lake Tanganyika in East Africa where the female
Frontosa Cichlids mouth brood their eggs and young fry.
This picture shows a very big male Frontosa about 12" long with a huge bump on his head, blue coloration on his face, and long pointed
fins that are typical of an old dominant male his size and age.
This is a smaller younger 9" male Frontosa. He has the metallic blue color, long pointed fins, and bump on his head that are seen on a
dominant male about his size. Click on each picture to see a bigger picture.
This 8" female Frontosa is holding eggs in her mouth, and her throat is extended. Compared to males, her fins are shorter, the bump on
her head is smaller, and she lacks the metallic blue coloration.
Scientific Name: Cyphotilapia frontosa
Appropriate Home
An Aquarium with an External Power Filter with a BIO-Wheel, a
maximum of 1/4" gravel, and an Aquarium Heater
adjusted to between 78 and 82 degrees F. Eventually this fish will need a big aquarium with plenty of aquarium-safe caves and rocks. Click here
for more about warm water aquariums.
Recommended Diet
When a Frontosa is small, feed it
floating flake food and
freeze dried blood worms both
available from most stores
that sell pet fish.
Later when the Frontosa grows bigger, feed Hikari Cichlid Pellets and an occasional treat of live or frozen brine shrimp.
Do NOT live Black Worms. Click here for more about feeding fish. Do not feed your Frontosa any kind of worms such as Brown Tubifex Worms or Black Worms. Click here
for more about Black Worms.

Compatibility
Keep one Frontosa in an aquarium or several but not 2 or 3, because the dominant one will make the others miserable. Eventually Frontosa
will need a large aquarium with various large Lake Tanganyika Cichlids and Synodontis Catfish as tank mates.
