Reply. Hello John. Click
here to see the list of Mbuna species that we sell now. We
usually have the Cobalts, Johanni, and Kenyi available in our
facility. These fish are about 1.5" to 2" long as shown on our list.
We will be happy to try to determine the gender of the fish you order, and send you as many males and as many females as you want.
Usually we can easily pick out males. The problem is the females, because immature males can look like females, until they grow to be quite large.
If you request 5 females one of two of them may turn out to be males. Click
here to read a story about setting
up a large aquarium with Mbuna species. In that story you'll notice that I removed several of the larger more aggressive fish. Those fish were mostly males. Many hobbyists have no interest in
breeding fish, and these brightly colored males are ideal fish for them.
Most people who breed Mbunas want more females. The solution is to buy more fish and then remove the extra males. Long ago my brother and I were breeding huge numbers of
Mbunas. We would raise up a group of 30 to 50 of a species and keep 3 males and all the females. Our breeding colonies would have the 3 males and 15 to 25 females.
The three males would quarrel with each other, and this would reduce the pressure on the females. Keeping three males also ensured that we would always have a male, even if one
or two of them were injured or jumped out of the aquarium. If you are a casual breeder one male and several females would make a nice group, or you might like to have 2 males and several
females.
If you decided to order Mbunas from us, be
sure to add a Special Request to your order. There are five ways to order from us now. Click

Similarly, you should include a comment on your order, if you send it by email, fax, or regular mail. Click

an example of such an order with a Special Request for 2 males Platies and four females at the bottom of the document.
Thank you for your compliments. |
