Breeding
Mbunas
Mbunas are
not too difficult to breed provided that you
have a large group with 15 or more of them in
a large aquarium with at least 60 gallons of
water. |

The
picture to the left shows a
young male Minutus about 3.5" long.
At the time this picture was taken
he had just begun to show brighter
colors, establish a territory, attract
females, and begin to spawn with
them. |

|
|

|
Like most
male Mbunas he has several egg shaped gold spots
on his fin. Click

The
picture to the left shows a
young female Minutus about 3.5"
long just after she had spawned
with the male shown above and picked
up a mouthful of eggs. Three weeks
later she released 35 fry that were
about 1/4" long.

Like many
female Mbunas, she has only one small egg shaped
spot on the fin. If you study these two pictures,
they will help you distinguish between male
and female Mbunas. |

can egg spots on some
types of cichlids determine
the sex? I have heard
mixed opinions.

Hello Jennifer. Yes eggs spots can be used to
determine the gender of some African Cichlids.
But many African Cichlids do not have egg spots.
Male Mbunas usually have large gold colored
egg-spots with a transparent ring around each
egg-spot. So the egg-spots really stand out
and are easy to see.
Some female Mbunas
also have egg-spots, but their egg-spots are
usually smaller and usually lack the clear ring.
So the female's egg spots are not as prominent.
You can see these
differences in the egg-spots in the pictures
of the male and female Minutus just above on
this page. The male has four large bright yellow
spots with a clear ring around each spot, and
the female has only one egg-spot that is smaller
and less distinct.
So both males
and females can have egg-spots, but the males'
egg-spots are bigger, brighter, and usually
more numerous than the egg-spots on the females'
fins.

Links to Other Websites
Below are
two web sites that have Links Pages that contain more links to other
interesting websites about African Cichlids.
Malawi
Cichlid Homepage. This is a very large and wonderful website
with a huge amount of information about Malawi Cichlids. I am reluctant
to presume to review this website, but it seems to me that it is mostly
full of information about keeping Malawi Cichlids in aquariums.
The
Cichlid Fishes of Lake Malawi, Africa. This is another very
large and wonderful website. In contrast to the above site, this site
contains mostly information about Malawi Cichlids in the wild, that is,
in Lake Malawi!
