Our Pictures

This website has lots of pictures of the fish that we offer for sale. Will the fish you get look like the fish in our pictures? No! This is like buying a kitten or a puppy, that will change as it grows and matures.

Click here to read more about our fish.

We stock and ship fish that are the ideal size to ship. Not so small that they will not do well when shipped. Yet not so big that they will have trouble adjusting to a new home.

The fish in almost all of our pictures were young fish like the ones we ship that we raised up, and you can too!

Scientific Name
Heterotilapia buttikoferi

Comments
Buttikoferi is a Cichlid from West Africa unlike most of the African Cichlids, whose ancestors lived in the Great Lakes in East Africa.

Buttikoferi grow fast to large sizes and are often kept in aquariums with Mbunas Cichlids from Lake Malawi.

Mbunas and Buttikoferi seem to be compatible, even though the Buttikoferi soon grow to be much larger than the Mbunas.

We have smaller Buttikoferi for sale in our facility.

Appropriate Home
Eventually in a very large aquarium with an external power filter with a BIO-Wheel, a maximum of 1/4-inch of gravel, and an aquarium heater adjusted to a temperature between 72 and 78 degrees F.

This fish is extremely tolerant of both cool water and warm water.

Recommended Diet
When they are small, feed them floating flake food and freeze dried blood worms.

Later when the Buttikoferi have grown to about 3", start feeding them Hikari Cichlid Pellets. All these foods are available in most stores that sell pet fish.

Feed your Buttikoferi an occasional treat of live or frozen brine shrimp, but do not feed them Black Worms.

Click here for more about feeding fish.

Compatibility
Either one to an aquarium or more than 3. Buttikoferi are Cichlids and like most Cichlids if you keep just 2 or 3 in the same aquarium, the strongest one will make the others miserable.

Buttikoferi do very well in a group of 6 or more in a large aquarium with 50-gallons or more of water.

Eventually a group of six Buttikoferi will need a very large aquarium.

Here are some fish often seen in the same aquariums with Buttikoferi: Oscars, Synodontis Catfish, Large White Tip Shark Cats. Large Plecostomus Catfish.

Buttikoferi are also often kept with Mbuna Cichlids from Lake Malawi.

Click here to read more about several other groups of compatible fish.

Size and Lifespan
Buttikoferi will quickly grow to be 12" long and then bigger. Their lifespan is about 6 to 10 years, and longer with good care.

Customer Comments

I also have one of these fish ... you might be interested to know she is between 15 - 17 years old; she was about 8 inches long when my mom purchased her in 1986!  We call her Alvin, but she is probably a female.  So I guess she never read her lifespan is between 6 and 10 years!

She is fairly healthy, but does have some swimming problems from time to time.  She still loves to eat!  We give her a variety of frozen, freeze-dried, and live foods including frozen brine, cooked veggies, crickets, and earthworms. She lives in a 55-gallon by herself and her tank is cleaned once a week (50% water change).

I guess we are doing something right! She also has the neatest personality; very intelligent and quite the "people fish"!  After 15 years, we could write a book about all her stories!  She  won numerous ribbons at a local fish show, and my mom won a story contest writing about her for a local pet magazine.

Sincerely,
Jennifer B.

Reply. Jennifer, thank you for your interesting comments. Most Buttikoferi could live this long if given good care.

But I would recommend changing no more than 20% of the water on one day. So you could change 20% of the water twice a week instead of 50% once a week.

Thanks again for telling us about your Buttikoferi.

When a large Cichlid, such as your Buttikoferi or an Oscar, is kept alone in one large aquarium, it will focus more of its attention on people and become more of a "people fish."

Some people worry that their fish will be lonely when kept alone in one aquarium. But this does not seem to be the case with Buttikoferi.
