Let me start off by saying great site I found alot of useful information on here. Now to the problem I have a 55 gal. aquarium that I am planing to put angelfish in so I have to change the ph.

According to a website I found they prefer to have a ph of 6.5 to 6.9 my tank right now has a ph of 7.6. I lowered it last night (using ph down) to 7.4 but as soon as I checked this morning it was back up to 7.6.

I was wondering what could have happened?? Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Reply. Hello Brandon. We are glad to know that this site is helping you. Your experience with the pH is typical and is due to what is called the buffering capacity of the water.

We do not recommend pH down. You do not need to lower the pH of the water in your aquarium to keep Angelfish. We have kept many Angelfish in water with pH 7.6 to 7.8, and they generally do fine.

Web sites, like the one you found, that recommend lowering the pH generally do more harm than good, because beginning aquarists are not ready to change the chemistry of water in their aquarium.

However, if you want to breed Angelfish and raise the babies, then you may need to change the water chemistry in your aquarium.

I would just like to comment on your site. It was really helpful to me, but I do have a comment on the finding out the sex of an Angel Fish. I have two 55 gallon fish tanks and have had fish for about ten years now. One of my 55 has all angels in it and I have three pairs.

The only way i have ever figured out a male or a female is by looking at their bottom long fins. The female will have at least one of her fins that forks out. The male's fins don't have that fork in them.

Reply. Hello Amy. Thank you for comment about how to determine the gender of Angelfish. I will definitely take a close look at my Angels. Thanks again.
