White Cheek Goby

23 May 2015
White Cheek Goby
These fish are named for the obvious reason of having white marks on their cheeks, but on top of their interesting markings, they have a great colorful shine to their fins.

Their two bottom fins allow them to perch on the aquarium floor, as they would in the wild, and they prefer a river-like water flow filtration much like their close friends, Hillstream Loaches.

These fish are very quirky and definitely recommended for any freshwater tank!

Royal Blue Danio

Royal Blue Danio
The Royal Blue Danio is often referred to as "Blue Trout", because of the way it behaves in the wild. They prefer a heavy current, and plenty of swimming room.

It's amazing to watch these fish eat, they will jump to the surface and then dive right back down! And because they are so fast, their shiny scales glimmer as they race through the water.

Truly a beautiful fish!

Trifaciata Rainbowfish

22 May 2015
Trifasciata Rainbowfish
When DrTom got this fish from AquariumFish.net, it was about 1.5" long and kinda drab. But it was energetic and very healthy. It was in fact a premium young fish.

DrTom kept the conditions in the aquarium almost perfect and fed premium fish food several times each day. After a few weeks this fish had grown quite a bit and began to show some reddish color.

A few more weeks and bam, this fish looked fantastic, when it posed for this picture. DrTom says it's really not difficult to do. Just get premium fish, feed premium food, and do the regular maintenance to keep the conditions nearly perfect.

Electric Yellow Labideochromis Cichlid

22 May 2015
Another Fabulous Fish
There's a very funny story about a fellow who was sure this fish was so beautiful that it had to be a saltwater fish. But it's a freshwater fish, whose ancestors lived among the rocks along the shores of Lake Malawi in East Africa.

Some people now call those piles of rocks, rocky reefs, and fish, like this one that live there, reef fish, because Lake Malawi is such a huge lake that it's like an ocean.

Whatever the reason this young male Electric Yellow is a gorgeous fish, and this species is very hardy, very energetic, not too aggressive, and grows to be about 3.5" long, which is a nice size for an aquarium fish.

This species is also likely to breed, especially when
fed plenty of premium foods.

These guys really battle with each other. Head to head, then all of a sudden, they swim in a very small circle, each one chasing the other one's tail.

They're the same species as the Regular Tiger Barb, but they lack the darker pigments, which makes them look mostly yellow, red, and orange. Especially if you feed them plenty of premium food.

Honey Gouramis

20 May 2015
Golden Honey Gourami
This is yet another fabulous aquarium fish, especially for smaller aquariums, because Honey Gouramis only grow to be at most 2" long. Well that might not be entirely true ... mostly true but not always true, because unlike mammals, fish continue to grow their entire lives. So occasionally there's specimen that's much much larger than normal.

But this is a small fish that does very well with other small fish like Neon Tetras, While Clouds, and Cory Catfish. They prefer to eat premium flake food. We love them. The one shown above is a beautiful golden male. This is a very highly recommended aquarium fish.

Pike Cichlid
These We know this is obviously a Pike Cichlid, but we don't know the exact species name.

Various Pike Cichlids live in a wide range of South America from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Orinoco in the north to parts of Argentina in the south.

The are called Pikes because they resemble the so-called true Pikes of the northern hemisphere, but they are not related to the true Pikes.

Both groups of Pikes are predators and eat smaller fish, insects, and other small living animals. But they do very well on a diet of premium foods.

It's inexpensive, gorgeous, very hardy, very energetic and active. So far they haven't really caused trouble in our aquariums, but as many cichlid species mature and grow large, they can become aggressive and cause trouble. Even so, many aquarists think they're worth it!

Flowerhorn Cichlid
This is Flowerhorn Cichlids. There's a great variety of Flowerhorns, and all of them are hybrids of several different Central American Cichlids.

Some folks believe we shouldn't sell hybrids, but then we wouldn't be selling Angelfish, Serpae Tetras, Swordtails, Platys, and many other popular aquarium fish.

Generally, we believe in letting our customers decide which fish they want to put in their aquariums.

This Flowerhorn is called a Neo Dragon. Our guy Anthony has been feeding this one really well and says, "It's grown a lot and the bump on it head is much bigger."

Blood Parrots are a hybrid, which means their parents were not the same species. In fact one parent was probably a Midas Cichlid and the other a Redhead Cichlid.

Some say Blood Parrots have heads look like a parrot's head and hence their name.

They're mild tempered and very friendly, and so some aquarists love them, but other aquarists are against hybrids.

Electric Blue Johanni Mbuna

12 May 2015
Electric Blue Johanni
As you see this fish is gorgeous! It's a member of a group of African Cichlids named Mbunas, whose ancestors lived in Lake Malawi in East Africa.

This species can grow to be about 5" long and can be quite ornery. So it's best to keep them with other Mbunas and a few Synodontis Catfish.

Redtail Shark

12 May 2015
Red Tail Shark
This is a good aquarium fish and a longtime favorite. Long-long ago DrTom and Nevin bought four Tiger Barbs and then a small Red Tail Shark for their first aquarium.

This species grows to be about 4" long, and sometimes very old Red Tail Sharks can grow to be even bigger. A little under 5" is the biggest one we've ever seen, which is a nice size for many aquariums.

Redtail Sharks are very quarrelsome with each other and with fish that look like them, so it's best to have just one or keep more than one in a very large aquarium. This is a very pretty fish with it's dark body and bright red tail.

Coolie Loach
Coolie Loaches are comedians. They do the darndest things. You look around your aquarium and find them in strange places. Or you can't find them at all, because they bury themselves down in the gravel for several days.

You miss them and worry about them, then they show up again, climbing around in a plant, like the one in the picture shown above. We love our Coolie Loaches!

Black and White Datnioides

11 May 2015
Silver Tiger Dat
This is a wild fish shown just above in one of our worst old pictures, but the fish are actually the nicest Datnioides that we've ever seen. Yes, they're really in good shape, and yes we apologize for this picture.

These Dats
are eating lots of premium pellet food, so there will be no need to feed them feeder fish, which would greatly increase the risk of sickness and disease.

If you want this fish, this is the ideal time to get one.

Female Blue Betta

10 May 2015
Female Bettas
Here are new pictures of our Female Bettas, and we have lots of Female Bettas with excellent coloration. These females are very young and just beginning to fill with eggs.

Several Female Betta Fish can live together in the same aquarium unlike Male Betta Fish that will fight and harm each other, when kept in the same aquarium.

We feed our Female Bettas premium pellet food, which they gobble up. Feeding premium pellets greatly increases their energy, coloration, and sheen. Premium foods are also more digestible with no fillers, so there is less waste, and the water stays cleaner.

Angelfish

10 May 2015
Beautiful Angelfish
This is one of DrTom's beautiful freshwater Angelfish. In particular it's a Leopard Angelfish, a very nice one.

DrTom got this fish from AquariumFish.net, and raised it up in a 55-gallon aquarium, feeding it premium flake and pellet foods 5 to 8-times a day.

Each feeding was a small meal about 60% of the maximum amount the Angelfish could eat at one time. It's not good to feed them the maximum amount they can eat at one time.

Angelfish are wonderful aquarium fish, and it's lots of fun to raise up a beautiful Angelfish like this one. Give it a try.

Sunset Cichlid male about 4" long

09 May 2015
Sunset Cichlid
A long-long time ago, when DrTom and Nevin Bailey were kids, they kept and loved some Sunset Cichlids.

The Brothers were always asking lots of questions, and when they asked about the name of this fish, their favorite old-timer, Frank Dayes, said to just look at the colors and the horizontal line.

Nowadays this Cichlid is often called the Nicaragua Cichlid
, but the Bailey Bros. can still hear Frank's explanation. So we call this fish the Sunset Cichlid. Whatever the name this is a gorgeous cichlid that's less aggressive than most Cichlids and very hardy.

The one in the picture is a mature male about 4" long and showing his full colors. The ones now are 2" to 2.5" long and show no colors. Feed them premium food then watch them grow fast and develop wonderful colors. This is a highly recommended aquarium fish.

Asian Bumblebee Catfish

08 May 2015
Asian Bumblebee Catfish
This is a very pretty aquarium catfish, which is caught wild in Asia and is not produced by fish farmers.

It prefers water with a pH slightly below 7.0 and low to moderate hardness, which are both  lower than most of the water in North America.

But this catfish can tolerate harder water with a higher pH, and so most aquarists do more harm than good trying to adjust their water chemistry.

An Asian Bumblebee Catfish will swallow any fish that fits into its mouth. So tankmates must be large enough not to be eaten.

This species will fight with catfish that look similar but is peaceful with other fish. So we recommend keeping just one Bumblebee Cat, unless the bottom area of the aquarium is at least 72" by 16".

Asian Bumblebee Catfish love eating premium pellet food and can grow quickly to be about 6" long, when well fed in an aquarium with good water.

Emperor Tetras

06 May 2015
Emperor Tetra
This is a young male Emperor Tetra, swimming in one of our aquariums.  As usual with the fish on this web site, he was born on a famous fish farm, but his ancestors lived across a wide area of northwestern Columbia in South America, and the color and patterns of this fish vary across this large area.

It's doubtful that you'll ever see Emperor Tetras like these in a local fish store or on other internet sites that sell pet fish.

The famous fish farms that supply us with fish obtain the very best and most colorful wild fish. Then these farms keep large numbers of breeding fish, and that prevents inbreeding, deformities, and loss of bright colors.

Compare the fish you see in the picture above with the fish or pictures that you see elsewhere. We think our DrTom takes good pictures, but he says it's mostly about the fish, and no one can photograph something that isn't there.

Please support us and the wonderful fish farms that supply us with premium pet fish.

But most female Platies release between about 6 and 30-babies at a time. If your aquarium needs a bright red fish, this could be the fish for you! By the way, Platies love to eat premium flakes and pellet food.

Fire Eel

05 May 2015
Fire Eel
Considered by many aquarists to be the most beautiful of all freshwater aquarium eels. They seem to get blacker and redder, as they get older.

Often seen at 24" long and sometimes as big as 36" inches when raised in ideal conditions. So eventually this Fire Eel will need a large aquarium.

Not really related to true eels, rather this is an elongated fish that looks like an eel. It's also a predator that eats fish, shrimps, and worms that fit into its mouth.

But to our surprise ours will eat premium pellet food. Probably best to also feed them some small fish, shrimps, and worms.

Black Spotted Eel
Another so-called Eel, which is actually a long slim fish. This species is rare and new to us. They develop a very distinctive pattern. They're also smart and long lived.

Like all the Eels that we know about, this guy's an escape artist, who will slithering out of the aquarium and end up dried out on the floor, unless you make the aquarium really escape-proof.

Black Ear Pengasius

04 May 2015
Black Ear Pangasius
This guy's always on the move looking for his next mouthful of food. He has to because he's a growing boy on his way to being over 50" long.

There are many of you, who prefer fish that grow to between 2" and 5" long, like we do, and you're critical of us for selling that fish will grow to be huge.

BUT there are some you, who love and want a huge fish. We hope you know that when this fish has grown to be 16" long, it'll be next to impossible to find it another home in someone else's aquarium.

So you should plan now to eventually get a very expensive very-very big aquarium with thousands of gallons of water. Big fish are cool!

Albino Royal Farlowella
This looks like a fragile fish, but it's not! It doesn't need acid rainwater to flourish, and can tolerate moderately hard, moderately alkaline water, which is nice. They've been spawned many times in aquariums. Notice the long streamer on the top of it's tail, which looks broken in the photo but is not!

Malawi OB Zebra
Just recently we said that many aquarists think the Malawi Cobalt Zebra is the prettiest of all the Mbuna species, but really isn't this Malawi OB Zebra just as pretty or maybe even prettier?

Male OB zebras can vary quite a bit in their colors, which sometimes include orange and black. The one in the picture lived for a long time in one of DrTom's aquariums. Notice that this male has two egg spots on one of his pelvic fins. By the way we've got a bunch of them available now!

Tiger Barb

29 April 2015
Tiger Barbs
Our Tiger Barbs are raised on the best fish farms in the world, and these are shiny, glossy, premium quality fish, as you can see in the picture just above.

In addition to the normal variety, shown above, there is also the Golden variety and the Green variety. All types of Tiger Barbs are beautiful, energetic, hardy, and inexpensive. Any drawbacks? Really just one: Tiger Barbs are nippers that will nip the fins of Angelfish, Betta Males, Silver Dollars, and several other fish.

So you must be careful in choosing compatible tank mates such as Danios, Gouramis, Rainbowfishes, Mollies, Swordtails, Platies, Loaches, Plecostomus, and other Catfish.

Nipping can also be minimized by keeping Tiger Barbs in a school of Tiger Barbs. The bigger the school: the less the nipping on other species, because the Tiger Barbs spend most of their time interacting with each other and frequently have whirling battles that are exciting and fun to watch.

To bring out their best coloration, energy, and health we feed them premium fish food. This is a very popular and highly recommended aquarium fish species.

The problem is they've been out of stock for quite a while. But we've been nattering our buyer, and he just got us some that are 3" to 3.5" long and looking good but have not yet developed the coloration shown in the picture.

To get the maximum coloration you'll need to grow them a bit and feed them premium food, which is what DrTom did with the fish in the picture.

By the way this fish is a mild Cichlid species that's not too aggressive. They're also another good example of the unique fish available here at AquariumFish.net.

Banded Leporinus
A beautiful inhabitant of the Amazon Rainforest, the Banded Leporinus is an excellent aquarium fish that's not too aggressive but may eat much smaller fish and nip the fins of very slow swimming fish like Angelfish.

These Banded Leporinus can swim fast to avoid problems with most aggressive fish. It's also very hardy and does very well on a diet of premium fish food.

Glowlight Danio

25 April 2015
Glowlight Danio
Every fish species has been molded by its natural environment, but it seems like this fish was molded to live in an aquarium.

It's inexpensive, gorgeous, very hardy, very energetic and active, doesn't really cause trouble, but swims very fast to avoid trouble. It's really a perfect aquarium fish.

We feed all of our Danios premium flake and pellet foods, which they all love to eat. By the way this is a natural occurring species and is not a genetically modified Zebra Danio, like the so-called Glofish.

Marbled Sailfin Pleco
Lot of new aquarists think that Plecostomus species are weird and ugly. But as time goes by most aquarists learn to enjoy Plecostomus catfish more and more and finally come to see the real beauty in them!

There are many many species of Plecos, and the one shown above is one of the best. It eats lots of algae but does not harm most plants. You can see in the picture that it develops a beautiful pattern of orange with chocolate spots.

This species grows to about 12", which is a large fish that will eventually need a large aquarium. It has a lifespan of several or even many years with good care, which includes feeding them premium food.

Clouded Archer Fish
This is a rather new and rare Archer Fish. There are thought to be about 6-species of Archer Fish. This species has irregular markings on its body that remind some people with lots of imagination of ... clouds. Whatever the name it's a very cool fish.

Aquarists have kept and loved Rams for a long time, but this color variety is NEW! Their scientific name is Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, which has been abbreviated as Ram Cichlid by aquarium hobbyists.

Their ancestors lived in pools on the savannah in northern South America. This is a dazzling new color variety, which grows to be about 2.5" long and is highly recommended as an aquarium fish.

The top picture, above, shows a young EB Ram, like the ones we have , and the lower picture shows a mature male.

Gorgeous Platies
Wowie Zowie look at those Platies. Both pictures were taken in our aquariums by one of us of our fish! To be honest we've never seen Platies anywhere else like the Platies in our aquariums.

If you order Platies from us, they won't look like these, but they have the potential to develop into Platies like these. Like a young kitten or puppy that has the potential to become a beautiful cat or dog.

You need very good young Platies like these, good water in your aquarium, feed really good food a few times a day, plenty of TLC, and a little bit of patience.

That is the way we do it. It's not hard, and it works every time for us. These Platies shine!
